About Anne Ryan

Ryan FamilyI'm a freelance florist, meaning I don't have a flower store. I work from my home studio because my primary job is being a mom. I leave my kids at home for the initial consultations, but don't be surprised to find one of them in tow for future meetings. I realize this is not a conventional approach to doing business, but there is nothing conventional about my flowers either. There are many benefits of working with a freelance florist, especially for a wedding or large party/event. Creativity, flexibility and custom designs all come to mind, but the primary benefit is personal service from start to finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How did you get started in this business?
A. I have a sales and marketing background in mountain bike components and hydraulic pallet jack parts. It seemed like a natural transition to move into flowers. Ha ha. OK, the truth is that I've always wanted to work with flowers but I had to pay the mortgage and a sales career seemed like an easier way to do it. When I got married my very generous husband gave me the green light to follow my dreams of floral design and, after attending floral school and doing extensive self-study of European design, the business began.

Q. What is your favorite part of the business?
A. Creating never-before-seen designs that knock people's socks off. I beg brides to give me extensive "creative license" so I can use my imagination to create designs that reflect their personality. It is hard for brides to "let go" and give a vendor the go-ahead, but if you trust the vendor this is your best bet for breathtaking results.

Q. What would you compare your floral designs to?
A. Art, specifically paintings. Just like painting you start with a blank slate and, if you want to do something new, you never know how it will turn out until you begin (hence the need for the creative license . . . you often need to make changes along the way!). You can mix colors (in the case of flowers you "mix" them by placing them a certain distance from each other), use different mediums, create different textures, reflect a mood, and much more. Most important, just like paintings, no two designs are ever exactly the same.

Q. Will you open a retail shop?
A. Although I would love to have a retail shop, it's not going to happen in the near future. Right now my priority is to be the primary caregiver for my three young children so I will continue to limit the number of weddings and events and run the business out of my home.
